We will look at the range of creative and innovative films directed by contemporary British Women Directors like Amma Asante (Belle, United Kingdom, etc.), Andrea Arnold (Red Road, Fish Tank, American Honey, etc.), Gurinder Chadha (I'm British But, Bend it Like Beckham, etc.), Carol Morley (The Alcohol Years, Dreams of a Life, Falling, etc.) and Lynne Ramsey (Cat Catcher, Morvern Callar, We Need to Talk about Kevin, etc). Through tutor presentations, notes, discussions and viewing films and extracts we analyse films while considering the significance and importance of women in the Cinema Industry. Analysis of the films will take into account representations of gender, sexuality, sexual orientation, race, class and age in films directed and often written, filmed and edited by women. We will also explore the commercial determinants to subjects and style in the production, distribution and exhibition of films in the Independent and Mainstream sectors of the Film Industry.
