This three-week course offers a critical introduction to feminist art histories, incorporating third-wave thinkers and decolonial approaches. Across three 1.5-hour sessions, participants will explore the work of three very different painters & printmakers - Frida Kahlo (b. 1907, Mexico); Katsushika ?i (b. 1800, Japan) and Marlene Dumas (b. 1953, South Africa) - from three different continents and working across three different centuries. This will be accompanied by critical essays by the Guerilla Girls, Linda Nochlin and Bell Hooks. Through group discussion and visual analysis, the course helps build learner's confidence understanding and ability to interpret key feminist works, theorists, and histories. Painting, an ancient medium, will be examined as a site of diverse perspectives, political resistance and world-building.
